Trump Administration Ends TPS Designation for Haiti
Today, the Trump Administration announced that Haiti will lose its TPS designation. This decision will affect approximately 60,000 people with their TPS "status" ultimately ending on July 22, 2019. Haiti was originally designated for TPS in 2010 after the country was devastated by an earthquake that left hundreds of thousands of inhabitants dead, displaced more than a million of people, and led to an outbreak of cholera.
Although the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had implied when it extended Haiti's TPS designation in May 2017 that Haiti would soon lose its TPS designation, the Haitian government had requested that the Trump administration extend the designation.
Those people from Haiti who will be losing their TPS status and seek to remain in the U.S. should consult with a U.S. immigration attorney as soon as possible to explore any options that they may have.
