Renew my U.S. Passport Online?!

Did you know that the U.S. Department of State (DOS) started a pilot program in August 2022 for renewing your U.S. passport online? I cannot say that I did. Unfortunately, it is now September and the pilot program was limited to the first 25,000 applications in August. I was unaware that one could create an account through the U.S. DOS page called MyTravelGov. It is my understanding that this is all relatively new. Currently, you can use your MyTravelGov account to apply for a U.S. Consular Report of Birth Abroad from limited locations: Frankfurt, Mexico City, Sydney, Paris, and Tokyo.

Currently, there is no option to renew your U.S. passport online. The U.S. Department of State plans to provide online U.S. passport renewal service to the general public later in the year. You may be able to renew your U.S. passport via a DS-82 by mail if you can say yes to all of the following five statements: (1) you have your U.S. passport in your possession to submit with your application (2) undamaged/only with normal wear (3) passport was issued to you when you were 16 years old or older (4) passport was issued within the last 15 years (5) passport was issued with your current name or you can provide proof of legal name change. Otherwise, you will need renew your U.S. passport in person via Form DS-11.

If you have questions or concerns regarding U.S. passport renewal, you may wish to consult with an immigration attorney. Attorney Rebecca Carcagno offers a free initial intake consultation over the phone which can help you determine your eligibility and obtain some general information. You may schedule this free initial intake consultation with Attorney Carcagno at (734) 999-0360 or through the website.
