TPS Designation Extended for Syria
Yesterday, January 31, 2018, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that Syria's TPS designation would be extended for 18 months (i.e., until September 30, 2019). The U.S. government specifically considered the original reasons for granting Syria TPS- armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions- and whether these conditions continue to exist in deciding to extend the TPS designation. There are about 7,000 people who receive Syrian TPS. To be eligible for the extension, the beneficiary would need to be a current Syrian TPS beneficiary, have resided in the U.S. continuously since August 1, 2016, and have been continuously physically present in the U.S. since October 1, 2016.
According to the announcement, information regarding applying for the extension will be published in the Federal Registrar notes.
